Russia should be held accountable for all crimes committed against the Ukrainian people and should be recognized as a terrorist state

On December 15, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the ninetieth anniversary of the Holodomor in Ukraine, which recognizes the terrible events of the 1930s as the genocide of the Ukrainian people. In addition to the EU, 19 countries have already recognized the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people. And this process of recognition will only continue and scale even more.

Today, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine does not differ from the goal of the genocide of 1932-1933, namely, the extermination of Ukrainian people. The atrocities committed by Russia in Buch, Irpen, Mariupol, Izyum and other Ukrainian cities, the purposeful destruction of critical civilian infrastructure, the destruction of historical and cultural heritage, and the forcible removal of the Ukrainian population to Russian territory are confirmation that the Russian Federation is waging a war against Ukrainian identity.

In the current war, Russia uses similar instruments of subjugation and information technology as during the organization and execution of the Holodomor.

For decades, the totalitarian regime in the Kremlin has done everything possible to hide from the international community the consequences of its repressive policies against Ukrainians. The Kremlin hushed up, distorted and denied historical facts in order to avoid responsibility for the crimes committed.

With the beginning of a full-scale war in Ukraine, the Russian Federation again resorted to deportation. As of December 2022, the Russians forcibly relocated more than 1.6 million Ukrainians to Russia.

Due to the fact that the Soviet crimes did not receive a clear legal and moral evaluation by the international community in time, as well as due to the fact that the «heroization of the totalitarian Soviet regime» took place in Russia, the Russian Federation has turned into a «state sponsor of terrorism and a state that uses terrorist methods» .

The genocide of the Ukrainian people has been systematically continued by Russia for over three centuries. The Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and now the Russian Federation are trying to erase the identity of Ukrainians, banning language, faith, traditions, and rewriting history.

For centuries, the Russians humiliated the Ukrainian people, sending them to perish in their imperial wars or  in prisons. For centuries, the Russians humiliated the Ukrainian people, sending them to die in their imperial wars or exterminating them in prisons.

Russia «as the legal successor of the Soviet Union» should not only officially recognize the Holodomor, but also «ask for forgiveness for all the crimes committed against the Ukrainian people, including the current aggression against Ukraine.»

For the countless troubles inflicted on the Ukrainian people, Russia, as the legal successor of the USSR, should be recognized as a terrorist state. The recognition of the Holodomor as genocide by the world community should contribute to bringing Russia to legal, historical, and economic responsibility and to the payment of reparations to Ukraine.
