On September 30th, Russia commemorates a grievous date: the anniversary of the war, annexation, and the suffering of Ukrainians, marked by murder and torture.
Just a few days ago, the so-called «Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots in Cyprus,» with the backing of the non/honorary consulate of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Cyprus, announced their intention to celebrate the annexation of Ukrainian territories.
We must emphasize that portions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions were seized by the Russian Federation during their war against independent Ukraine.
The fact that Russians plan to celebrate the crime of annexation and an unjust war on the soil of Cyprus, a nation that endured the tragedy of territorial annexation in 1974, adds a layer of particular cynicism to this «event.»
However, such cynicism and arrogance toward a nation that welcomes Russians onto its territory has become a characteristic feature of this state.
Ukrainian women with children, who have found refuge in Cyprus, including those who fled the territories temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation, express their deep outrage at the actions of the non/honorary consulate of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Cyprus. This consulate promotes a crime of international magnitude and the resulting loss of innocent lives among the civilian population, including the elderly, women, and children.
On September 30th, at 3:30 p.m., Ukrainians in Cyprus will gather outside the non/honorary consulate of the Russian Federation in Limassol to protest against the celebration of the annexation of sovereign and independent Ukrainian territories and the loss of Ukrainian lives. During this event, we will organize a photo exhibition that vividly illustrates the inhuman cruelty of Russia’s aggressive actions in Ukraine. Additionally, a symbolic memorial cemetery for the victims of Russian aggression will be set up near the consulate. This will serve as a stark reminder to the wider public of what the Russian community in Cyprus is «celebrating.» A symbolic mourning wreath, representing all the lives lost in Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, will be presented to the non/honorary consul of the so-called Russian Federation.
Cypriots and representatives of other national diasporas and communities from various countries have expressed their intention to stand in solidarity with Ukrainians, making this union deeply symbolic.
The photos for the exhibition were provided by the famous Ukrainian photographers Vlada and Kostyantyn Liberov.
We extend an invitation to representatives of the media to join us.
