IDF vows probe of deadly Gaza aid chaos, rejects claim it deliberately hurt civilians

The Israeli military on Saturday promised an exhaustive and truthful investigation into the deaths of Palestinians queuing for aid in Gaza this week, an incident that has drawn condemnations and calls for an international inquiry.

IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said Saturday night that Israel will present its findings from Thursday’s deadly melee, during which dozens of Palestinians were killed and hundreds more wounded while swarming aid trucks in Gaza City.

Hamas accused Israeli troops of shooting at the crowd of thousands, while the IDF says many of the casualties were trampled in a chaotic crush for the food aid, and that its troops only fired at a few individuals who rushed toward them in a threatening manner.

“We are investigating this incident, we have all the footage we need to complete an exhaustive investigation and find out the truth of the facts of this incident, and we will present the findings,” Hagari said in an evening press conference.

“This was a humanitarian operation we conducted, and the claim that we intentionally struck the convoy and intentionally harmed people is baseless,” he added.

Hagari said the aid delivery Thursday was the fourth such operation in that area in Gaza City.

Some of those wounded in the debacle said Israeli forces shot at them as they rushed to get aid. Doctors at Gaza hospitals have reported to the UN that many of those injured were being treated for gunfire wounds.

The New York Times also quoted eyewitnesses claiming that Israeli tanks and other forces fired at people trying to get supplies from the convoy.
