Act of ecocide: Russians deliberately blow up Kakhovka HPP dam to provoke environmental disaster

On the morning of June 6, 2023, the Russians carried out the biggest terrorist attack against Ukraine this year – they deliberately blew up the dam at the Kakhovka HPP, built back in 1958. The facility provided fresh water to the south of Ukraine, ensured farmland irrigation and the cooling of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia NPP. As a result of this war crime, dozens, probably more than a hundred settlements across Kherson region will be flooded (in some of them, including Nova Kakhovka, the water level rose by 10 m already 6 hours after the explosion), hundreds of thousands of civilians found themselves in the risk zone, while economic losses will reach billions of dollars. The blowing up of the dam could become the biggest man-made disaster in the world after Chornobyl and Fukushima: Russia is a terrorist state that exterminates the civilian population in any possible way and therefore must be held accountable for each of its crimes.

The Russians completely destroyed the Kakhovka HPP: as of 10:00 a.m. on June 6, 2023, the facility, seen as strategically important for the economy of southern Ukraine, no longer exists. For years, millions of people, the Ukrainian economy, and agriculture will be deprived of fresh water resources. Russia has once again confirmed its reputation as a terrorist state, which commits war crimes that affect the civilian population. And it’s not only about Ukraine: due to the drought, which will cover millions of square kilometers of arable land, the export of Ukrainian grain will decrease sharply as early as this year – Putin needs a famine in Africa to provoke a wave of millions of refugees to the EU. In Ukraine and Europe itself, millions of civilians are at risk of a radioactive disaster: a shutdown due to overheating of the Zaporizhzhiia NPP reactors could lead to an accident that would not be inferior in terms of its scale to that at the Chornobyl NPP in 1986. Russia is an existential threat to the whole world.

A demonstrative terrorist attack, pre-mediated and carried out by the Russians (after all, the Kakhovka HPP had been mined back in 2022) proves that Putin does not consider the occupied territories of Ukraine “Russian” – he sees them only as a springboard for an attack on Ukraine. Now that Russia is terrified of Ukraine’s looming counteroffensive, they have simply blown up the dam, creating the conditions for a complex disaster. Russia is a geopolitical locust that destroys and devastates, and then withdraws, leaving behind an uninhabitable territory. The Russians in Ukraine are developing a criminal algorithm that will be implemented in Europe if Russia is not stopped immediately. The crimes committed by the Kremlin almost on a daily basis day leave no doubt that it is the greatest threat to humanity. Ukraine is restraining the enraged Putin at the cost of huge sacrifices. If he is not dealt a quick and resolute defeat, he will destroy life on earth as we know it.
