The fourth meeting on the Ukrainian Peace Formula completed in Davos. A positive trend can be seen in the field of security guarantees for Ukraine, which in turn will have a positive impact on Europe.
During the Vilnius NATO Summit last July, partner countries declared their unconditional support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, as well as on its path toward the EU and NATO. Bilateral agreements on security assurances were needed to legally consolidate the intentions of the partners, and last week the relevant process was launched by the UK, which was the first to conclude an agreement on security assurances for Ukraine.
As part of the meeting in Davos, this process went on as the Ukrainian side kicked off bilateral negotiations with Romania on striking a bilateral security deal. Thus, Romania became the ninth country to launch bilateral security negotiations with Ukraine.
Security assurances from Romania are important in particular for the Black Sea region, which is strategically critical not only for Ukraine. Effectively countering Russian threats to the Black Sea area guarantees not only security in a general sense, but is also the basis for global food security. Thus, cooperation in strengthening the security of the Black Sea region will help mitigate Russian threats for the nations that depend on Ukrainian food supplies.
Security assurances also influence other countries across the region as the threat of Russian aggression stretches quite far; in particular, Russia continues to try to destabilize Moldova. Thus, the provision of security assurances to Ukraine by Romania creates favorable security conditions for the two neighboring countries.
Thus, not only are security assurances a significant step towards Ukraine’s victory over Russia and avoiding repeated aggression, they also send a clear signal of partners’ steadfastness in supporting Ukraine.
