For the sixth time, Cyprus had the honour of welcoming 180 children and 40 carers as part of an extraordinary initiative by Zichron Menachem, a remarkable organization dedicated to supporting children battling cancer. These young visitors, each facing the immense challenges of their illness, were treated to a transformative holiday designed to bring joy, hope, and unforgettable memories.
Cancer, an illness that drains energy and steals the innocence of childhood, imposes routines of doctors’ appointments, treatments, and hospital stays. However, thanks to the tireless dedication of Haim and Miri Ehrental, who founded Zichron Menachem in 1990, these children experience moments of respite and happiness. The organization, established in memory of the Ehrentals’ own child who succumbed to cancer, has become a beacon of hope for countless families.
About Zichron Menachem: Established to provide emotional, psychological, and practical support to children with cancer and their families, Zichron Menachem organizes year-round programs, including trips, camps, and support services. For more details, visit Zichron Menachem.
Why Cyprus?
Cyprus has been the destination of choice for Zichron Menachem’s annual holiday thanks to the warm hospitality of its people and the unwavering support of the Jewish Community of Cyprus, led by Chief Rabbi Arie Zeev Raskin. Upon every visit, Rabbi Raskin personally welcomes the children, ensuring they feel at home from the moment they land at Larnaca Airport.
Why has Zichron Menachem chosen Cyprus for these holidays six times now?
Rabbi Raskin: “It’s the welcoming nature of the Cypriot people. From the moment the children arrive, the kindness begins. The Hermes staff at Larnaca Airport go above and beyond to care for the children’s special needs. The love and support continue throughout their stay – from the coach travel that was donated to carry the children to the many activity-filled days they enjoy across the island. Every aspect of their visit is carefully planned to bring them joy.”
A Community Effort
The success of these holidays depends on the involvement of many dedicated individuals. Members of the Jewish community in Cyprus prepare hundreds of meals daily with love, ensuring the children have nutritious food during their stay. Cypriot businesses and volunteers offer their services freely, providing exciting experiences such as 4×4 adventures in Ayia Napa, Visits to action parks in Paphos, Fun-filled days at luna parks across Nicosia, Limassol, Shopping trips to MyMall in Limassol, Bowling events and an end-of-trip party in Larnaca
“It’s heartwarming to see how no one turns them away. Everyone wants to contribute to making these children’s holidays unforgettable,” Rabbi Raskin noted.
The Healing Power of Joy
When asked how these trips help the children, Rabbi Raskin explained:
“The psychology of changing environments, seeing new places, and experiencing new things is life changing. These children spend most of their time in hospitals, enduring treatments while longing for a normal childhood. Trips like these give them hope and excitement. I truly believe it saves lives because half the battle is mental. When children feel hope, their ability to fight improves.”
A Tradition of Kindness
The warm hospitality of the Cypriot people and the beauty of the island continue to attract Zichron Menachem year after year. Rabbi Raskin is confident that Cyprus will remain the preferred destination for these transformative holidays, saying:
“I truly believe Zichron Menachem will keep choosing Cyprus. The kindness of the Cypriot people, the support of our community, and the beauty of our island make it the perfect place to bring joy to these children.”
A Shared Fight Against Cancer
Cancer is a devastating illness that affects thousands of children worldwide. In Israel alone, approximately 450 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, while in Cyprus, Childhood cancer is a significant health concern, with recent studies indicating notably high incidence rates. In 2022, an estimated 35 new cases were diagnosed among individuals aged 0 to 19 years, comprising 17 girls and 18 boys. The battle continues with the support of doctors, nurses, and medical staff who fight tirelessly to save lives.
Holidays like those organized by Zichron Menachem provide a crucial boost to the emotional and mental well-being of these children, offering a momentary escape from their daily struggles and a chance to create memories that will carry them through the darkest of times.
Cyprus remains a place where happiness truly heals. Through the collaboration of Zichron Menachem, the Jewish Community of Cyprus, and the kind hearts of the Cypriot people, these children are reminded of the joy, hope, and love that still exist in the world.
