Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has had catastrophic consequences that are felt throughout the world. As a result of the blockade of Ukrainian seaports, a grain crisis arose, which continues to this day. In this way, Russia is trying to create an artificial famine in order to put pressure on the countries of the Global South, and to discredit Ukraine, which is known as a reliable (and one of the largest until 2022) food suppliers in the world.
An artificial food crisis will create new challenges for European security. Refugees fleeing from hunger from countries in Africa and the Middle East will provoke a migration crisis in the EU, which Russia is actually seeking. Therefore, resolving the grain issue is extremely important, and Europe is one of the most motivated one in neutralizing this threat.
By ensuring free export of grain from Ukraine, Europe responds rapidly to the migration crisis and refugees from Africa. Thus, France has already transferred a second ship to Ukraine to transport grain and supply the world with Ukrainian food. For its part, the European Commission will provide Ukraine with 50 million euros to repair port infrastructure damaged by Russian attacks in order to facilitate the further export of Ukrainian agricultural products to the world market.
The food issue is the basis for global peace and stability. Russia directly threatens world food security, putting millions of people in Africa and the Middle East at risk of starvation. Confronting the Russian threat and its influence on in the grain crisis will ensure global stability and reduce migration risks for the EU.
