On September 19, 2024, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling on EU countries to lift all restrictions on Ukraine’s use of Western weapons to strike military targets in Russia. This is an important step, since previous restrictions prevented Kyiv from effectively defending itself against Russian aggression. The resolution was agreed by MEPs in a 425-131 vote, demonstrating Europe’s readiness to take more decisive action in the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Many European politicians expressed support for this decision. They emphasized that the resolution was a necessary step to ensure Ukraine’s right to self-defense. In addition, earlier, the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee Rob Bauer noted that Ukraine had a “legal right to strike Russian territory,” as this was in line with international law, which allows nations to defend themselves against external aggression beyond their borders.
Lifting restrictions on long-range weapons will allow Ukraine to defend itself more effectively. This allows to destroy logistics chains and military warehouses on Russian territory, which will prevent further attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and civilians. Ukraine’s right to self-defense, provided for in international law, includes the possibility of retaliation, regardless of territorial borders.
This initiative also does not contradict the Plan for Victory of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which will be voiced at the UN General Assembly soon. The plan consists of four key elements: a military strategy to liberate the occupied territories, strengthening the international coalition for further military and financial support, the restoration of Ukraine’s economic and energy security, as well as ensuring justice by international courts and country’s territorial integrity. These measures are aimed at a complete victory for Ukraine and the restoration of its sovereignty, including strikes on Russian military facilities, which is critical to weakening the enemy and ensuring security.
The United States remains a key player in this process. Despite European support, Washington has previously limited Ukraine in using Western weapons to strike Russia due to fears of escalation. However, recent US actions indicate a possible changes in a policy that could play a decisive role in Ukraine’s victory.
Ukraine is defending not only its independence, but also the stability of all of Europe. To support this resolution is not about a military strategy, but to recognize Ukraine’s right to defend itself against aggression. Europe and the West must continue to provide military and financial assistance to stop Russian aggression and ensure peace on the continent. Assistance to Ukraine is an investment in the stable future of Europe and the world.
