Cyprus targeted by Russian social media disinformation over Middle East conflict

Cyprus has become the target of Russian disinformation via a social media account on X, which is disseminating false information about the country’s alleged involvement in the Middle East conflict, — Philenews informs.

An account named ‘Megatron’ shared a post on Friday claiming that Cyprus is getting involved in the war.

The post, which cited Channel 7’s website, alleged that senior US military officials had arrived in Cyprus and stated the island would be used to defend against potential attacks from Iran, Hezbollah, and Yemen.

However, sources indicate that ‘Megatron’ is a known purveyor of misinformation on Platform X. The account had previously been accused of spreading false reports regarding the war in Gaza.

Analysts have identified ‘Megatron’ as part of an organised network that manipulates or fabricates information to benefit Russian interests. The account regularly posts pro-Russian and anti-Ukrainian propaganda.
