The Impossible is Possible: The Role of F-16s and International Support in Ukraine’s Air Defense

31st July 2024 marked a significant day for Ukraine: the country received its first batch of ten F-16 fighter jets from the international «Fighter Coalition,» which includes the USA, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Poland, Romania, Belgium, and several other countries. On August 4, during the Air Force Day celebrations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, F-16 fighter jets appeared in Ukrainian skies for the first time! This event not only signifies continued support for Ukraine from Western partners but also opens new prospects for Kyiv’s defense capabilities. For two and a half years, Ukraine has been repelling daily attacks from the Kremlin on peaceful Ukrainian cities, civilian and energy infrastructure, hospitals, maternity wards, schools, and residential homes.

The «Fighter Coalition,» also known as the «F-16 Coalition,» is an international alliance of 14 countries committed to supporting Ukraine in its struggle against the Russian invasion. The coalition includes Belgium, the United Kingdom, Greece, Denmark, Canada, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, the United States, France, and Sweden. These nations are joining forces to organize the supply of F-16s, train Ukrainian pilots, technicians, and ground personnel, and create the necessary infrastructure to effectively use these aircraft in combat conditions.

The primary goal of the coalition is to enhance the capabilities of the Ukrainian Air Force in repelling Russian air attacks and protecting civilians. Coalition member countries are providing not only aircraft but also essential equipment, weapons, and training for Ukrainian military specialists. This cooperation has been made possible through the support of NATO countries and their commitment to strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid ongoing aggression from Russia.

F-16 fighter jets, often referred to in professional circles as «Fighting Falcons,» are among the most versatile and effective combat aircraft in the world. These multirole fighters, developed in the 1970s, continue to be a mainstay in the arsenals of many countries due to their ongoing upgrades and high combat effectiveness. They are capable of performing a wide range of missions, from air-to-air combat to strikes on ground targets.

For Ukraine, fighting against the Russian aggressor for more than two and a half years and repelling Russia’s unprovoked full-scale war, the F-16s represent a significant enhancement of its defense capabilities. With these aircraft, Ukrainian air forces will be able to counter Russian missile strikes and drone attacks more effectively. The presence of F-16s will enable Ukraine to significantly reduce the number of attacks on its cities and critical infrastructure, which is especially important given the ongoing bombings by Russia.

Ukrainian pilots, trained abroad, have been given access to more than just standard models of the F-16. These multirole fighter jets will play a key role not only in defending Ukraine but also in potential offensive operations. The jets are fitted with modern targeting systems, including JHMCS helmet-mounted displays, enabling pilots to deliver precise strikes. This capability is especially important for strategic missions targeting legitimate military objectives, such as enemy military bases, airfields, ammunition depots, and other facilities used for combat operations. Therefore, in addition to defense, the F-16s can be utilized for preemptive strikes against threats to Ukraine’s security.

Additionally, the Ukrainian F-16s are equipped with advanced pylons that feature integrated missile warning sensors and electronic warfare systems. These technologies not only enhance the combat capabilities of the fighters but also significantly increase the safety of pilots in the midst of intense combat situations.

Ukraine expects to have 20 F-16s by the end of 2024, and the total number of these fighters is projected to reach 79 by 2025. This expansion of the air fleet will enable the Ukrainian Air Force not only to effectively defend its borders but also to conduct active offensive operations against the aggressor, potentially altering the course of the war.

The appearance of F-16s in the skies over Ukraine represents not only a military victory but also a symbolic triumph for the country. It demonstrates that the impossible becomes possible when the international community unites to support those fighting for their freedom and independence.

With the support of international partners, Ukraine plans to develop a powerful aviation component to significantly strengthen its Air Force. This initiative aims to ensure the protection of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while making a substantial contribution to the security of the entire European continent. Given the current geopolitical conditions, this development is especially crucial for the Baltic States, Poland, Moldova, and other European countries that have faced repeated threats from the Russian Federation. In light of Russia’s increased aggression, these countries face a growing threat, making it essential to bolster the defense capabilities of all of Europe.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized the importance of the prompt delivery of F-16 fighters to Ukraine in a comment to Bild, highlighting it as a significant example of military support from NATO countries. Stoltenberg pointed out that NATO allies are not only supplying F-16s but also training pilots and providing weapons for these fighters, showcasing the substantial military assistance being offered to Ukraine by the alliance.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki emphasized the importance of providing Ukraine with modern fighters like the F-16 to strengthen its defense capabilities. He stated that Poland is ready to support Ukraine with both arms supplies and the training of Ukrainian military personnel. Morawiecki also stressed that Poland actively supports the international community’s efforts to assist Ukraine and views this initiative as a crucial element in deterring Russian aggression.

Alexander De Croo, the Prime Minister of Belgium, expressed his support for the decision to supply F-16s to Ukraine, stating that it demonstrates the international community’s solidarity with Ukraine in its struggle for sovereignty. He noted that Belgium is also participating in international efforts to train Ukrainian pilots and supply weapons, highlighting this as an important contribution to the overall security of Europe.

What other needs does Ukraine have in combating Russian aggression?

Ukraine’s essential needs in combating Russian aggression remain both relevant and unchanged. The foremost priority for Kyiv is acquiring modern and effective air defense systems, such as the Patriot and SAMP/T, along with the necessary missiles to ensure these systems operate at full capacity. Additionally, artillery systems and ammunition, long-range missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and electronic warfare systems are critically important. These resources are required in sufficient quantities to effectively repel Russian aggression.

To ensure comprehensive and reliable protection of Ukraine’s territory, at least 25 Patriot systems are required. These complexes will become a crucial component in defending the country’s airspace, preventing Russian aircraft from penetrating to a distance that would allow them to deploy guided bombs against civilian and military targets.

The permission granted by the United States for Ukraine to use the provided weapons to strike military targets within Russia has already demonstrated its effectiveness, contributing to halting the Russian advance on Kharkiv. Further lifting all restrictions on the use of supplied weaponry and increasing the volume of defensive system deliveries will allow Ukraine to counter Russian aggression even more effectively and gradually liberate temporarily occupied territories.

Moreover, to effectively counter Russian aviation, which deploys over 300 aircraft against Ukraine daily, the Ukrainian military needs at least 128 modern combat aircraft. Ensuring the capability to launch long-range strikes and developing a modern, multi-layered air defense system are key elements in stopping Russia’s daily terror. These measures will not only protect Ukrainian cities and infrastructure but also create conditions for the swift restoration of peace, not only in Ukraine but also in Europe and the world.
